A Dead Eight Year Old and His Accused Grandmother

Mother-in-law looks up from the newspaper:  Well you know, most crimes are committed by black people.  That woman was naturally afraid that her grandson was headed for prison.  So she punished him for stealing candy.  It's understandable what she did.  She has a reputation for being a kind woman who does good works.

Mother-in-law sighs, pretending that we are no longer there in her study.

Housemate interjects:  It's not black people that commit most crimes.  It's poor people that commit the most crimes. *

Mother-in-law ignores us:  The crocuses in the back of the house are lovely.  Look, you can see them from the window.

*radical sapphoq says:  The answer to the question of which demographic of Americans commit more crimes is not entirely clear.  A small sampling of the web reveals several things:
     1).  The word "crime" has various definitions, depending upon who is doing the talking;
     2).  People are not so easily identifiable as a particular "race" as one would believe [e.g. Mexicans being labeled as "white" when committing "hate crimes" against "blacks"];
     3).  A certain unknown percentage of people actually get away with the crimes they have committed  [e.g. politicians, those granted diplomatic immunity, those who can pay for brilliant defense attorneys, the very few folks who successfully plead insanity];
     4).  The data reflects those who were convicted and sent to prison [and a very very small percentage of folks in that category actually "didn't do it] and does not account for the unknown percentage of folks who were able to plea-bargain their way out of serving prison time;
     5).  The question itself [which demographic of Americans commit or are prone to commit more crimes] may be flawed due to the multi-factorial nature of the psychology and sociology of criminal behaviors.  

The thing is, there are very few excuses for bad behavior that are acceptable to society as a whole.  Society demands that people pay for their crimes.  "Do the crime, do the time."  This is as it should be.  To those bleeding-hearts who wax eloquent about putting people in cages, I can tell you from my own experience that most of the prisoners that I have met belong in prison.  [Yes, I worked in a prison many years ago].  That prisoner who-- murdered someone, raped someone, injured someone, stole from someone-- hurt someone lost his or her privilege of self-determination for a really good reason.  [Furthermore, I support chemical castration and civil commitment for convicted pedophiliacs-- once their prison sentences have been served.  Civil commitment can be in the form of little houses or trailers on prison grounds behind a guarded fence perhaps.  On the other hand, that prisoner who got three years in the state pen for having three joints in car while traveling through an area points to the FAIL inherent in the Rockerfeller Drug Laws.  The War on Drugs is also FAIL].  By the same token, that ex-con who is off-paper has paid his or her debt to society.
