DEFINITIONS

TOLERANCE ,DIVERSITY , AND CENSORSHIP

TOLERANCE: a personal decision springing from the recognition that our diversity is our strength. [vs. xenophobia]

DIVERSITY: traits or characteristics or stuff that marks us as individuals. [vs. stereotyping]

CENSORSHIP: one of the ways that an

in-group [group of people who are perceived of as having privileges they did not earn by virtue of membership in the group] attempts to keep an

out-group [group of people who are perceived of being "less than" as a whole by virtue of differences of race, class, gender, sexual practices, orientation, politics, religion, appearance, poverty, abilities, beliefs, or lack of]

OUT OF

political office ,

educational or employment opportunities ,

select neighborhoods ,

or any other public arena--

including fair and accurate media coverage ,

legal remedies , and

self-expression. [vs. freedom of speech, movement, and being for all peoples]

INCLUSION: breaking down the barriers [be they physical or other] between the in-group and the out-groups; sharing the wealth and the power and the privilege; extending welcome to all members of a community.


COMMUNITY: a group of people who practice inclusion.
