LET THE SUBWAYS CRUMBLE 10/6/05

NOW after all this freakin' time, someone cares about the subway system in New York City???

NOW cuz the f.b.i. says "it" might be a possible target?? NOW after how many years of underground violence?

I used to live in New Jersey and I was well acquainted with the subway system. My best friend Peggy and I in high school used to sneak down the stairs and under the turnstiles. We went all over the city on the subways. We knew which station sold the best knishes, where to get off for Coney Island or the Bowery, where to find the best hot pretzels, when the next subway was due in, and which stations were impossible to sneak into.

Our parents didn't know any of these things. Our parents didn't know exactly where we were spending our Saturdays. They thought we were taking "the bus" to Manhattan and eating lunch at O'Neill's Balloon. Peggy and I rammed all over the five boroughs enjoying our freedom to go exactly where we wanted to go and do what we wanted to do.

The subways were not safe then. And that was in the early seventies. There were muggings in some of the stations; and pick-pockets. We heard about the rapes though never witnessed one, smelled the urine splashed against the walls of the stations by the winos, peered into the tunnels hoping to glimpse the homeless who were rumored to live there, acted tough so we would be left alone by the knife-wielding thugs. The people of the dark owned the subway system then and they still own it now.

So now that the president has just announced that our soldiers will continue in Iraq until who the fuck knows when; now that more "evidence" has been uncovered; now new york city cares and are going to patrol the subways more heavily. That will help avert another 9/11 type disaster. Yeah, right!

Funny that no one gave two shits about the subways years ago or the high crime rate underground.
