Cerne and those of his ilk [The Horned One, The Stag, The Green Man, Pan...] have frequently been assumed by literalist christians to be the same as their devil [daemon, Satan, Lucifer, the Evil One, fallen angels...]. This is an erroneous assumption and one that has been encouraged throughout recent centuries because it benefits the cause of those of the new religion to make us all out to be "devil-worshippers."

Women and a few men found their death at the hands of the new religion in the burning times. They were for the most part falsely accused of being witches, participating in wild sex orgies in forests at night, and flying around on broomsticks. The word "witch" became intertwined with the words "devil worshipper."

Witches do not "worship" satan. The christian devil is of christian construct.

All of which begs the question of whether or not a society is really free. Do we really mean it when we say things like "to each their own" or "freedom of [and from] religion?" If our neighbors' spiritual practices are different from or foreign to our own, do we uphold their right as adults to do as they will, providing it harm none?
